Canoe Place Inn & Cottages

Canoe Place Inn & Cottages is a treasured Long Island landmark founded in the seventeenth century as the Canoe Place Inn. For hundreds of years, Canoe Place was the “First Stop out East” – a comfortable, welcoming getaway where friends, families, and cultures have gathered for generations. After a major renovation by Rechler Equity Partners, the storied property reopened in August 2022 in partnership with Main Street Hospitality as a boutique inn, restaurant, and event venue. The restored property blends tradition with modern luxury, offering thirteen guest rooms, seven luxurious suites, and five guest cottages on six meticulously landscaped acres; Good Ground Tavern, a regionally inspired restaurant and bar; a spa by Sommetbeauty; and a beautifully renovated grand ballroom and pavilion.

As the site of America’s oldest inn, Canoe Place has hosted numerous legends including Cary Grant, Lucille Ball, and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, while also featuring performances by renowned artists like Duke Ellington and Billy Joel. Today, the property plays tribute to this rich history with its thought-provoking music and speaker series, Front Row.

Recognized on Travel + Leisure’s 2023 “It List,” Canoe Place is highlighted amongst the best new hotels in the world and the best new resorts in the U.S.

Dining
Good Ground Tavern, the property’s signature restaurant, embodies coastal elegance and local flavor with dishes crafted from locally sourced ingredients fused with a Mediterranean twist. With an indoor and outdoor atmosphere, Good Ground Tavern is centered around open-fire cooking, house-made pastas and pizzas, and a focus on local seafood and ingredients, with 100 cozy indoor seats and an additional 120 seats in the covered “garden by the sea” terrace. The tavern’s indoor and outdoor bars are both coated in a signature green to evoke a shaded garden spot.

Working in partnership with the East End community, the team at Canoe Place sources only the highest quality and freshest ingredients. Menus change and flow with the seasons and are an inspired tribute to field and sea with signature dishes including the Peconic Bay Clam Pie, CP Clams Casino, Long Island Fluke Crudo, Whipped Ricotta, and Whole Roasted Young Chicken.

Discreetly tucked away behind the tavern, a private study reminiscent of the inn’s days as a speakeasy serves as an intimate cocktail destination. Known as The Bottle Room, its original brick fireplace remains a focal point and it is styled with historic photos of the inn collected over time.

Accommodations and Amenities
The property’s twenty guest rooms and five luxurious guest cottages sit on nearly six manicured acres with on-site amenities including a heated pool, fitness center, spa, and exclusive beach shuttle.

Canoe Place blends the comforts and intimacy of a family home with the amenities of a boutique seaside resort, all meticulously designed as a gathering place for visitors and local residents. The property’s interiors, designed by the acclaimed Brooklyn-based firm Workstead, are a homage to its storied past as a welcoming and dynamic waterside retreat. Art from local and internationally renowned painters and sculptors, from Doug Aitken and Elsa Hansen Oldham to Tony Tasset and James Turrell, figure prominently in the guest accommodations and public spaces inside and across the Canoe Place property.

Spa and Wellness
The property’s full-service Sommetbeauty Spa offers guests and the public the option to experience clean beauty within a warm and inviting space. A dedicated and passionate team of therapists guides clients to find the best products and treatments for their skin, lifestyle, and peace of mind, offering world-class facial and body treatments that leave the recipient feeling renewed, refreshed, and relaxed.

Front Row Speaker Series
Canoe Place provides an enriching guest experience, bringing its rich history of arts and culture to the present day with a thought-provoking music and speaker series entitled Front Row. The series offers exclusive access to the gatekeepers of today’s arts, culture, music, and entertainment dialogues, and it’s bound to challenge perspectives and inspire conversation. The year-round programming combines intimate live talks, musical performances, and film screenings to encourage people from all walks of life to come together to listen, share, and discover.
